At the very least, what do you want from life? If you really think about it, I bet you’d answer something along the lines of security, comfort and well-being. Security might mean money in the bank or a roof over your head. It might mean owning your home or always being able to afford the rent. Security might be a safe neighborhood, free from crime or violence. Maybe you think of your job, that it might be consistent and secure, or that you’ll have enough money to live your life after you stop working.
Comfort? Well, some of the things on your security list imply comfort. And, it could mean that you have a healthy body, enough food to eat and a restful place to lay your head at night. For some of us, comfort is the company of loved ones, clothes that are clean and appropriate to the weather, or a good book.
Well-being can surely include those things that bring security and comfort, and then some. From feeling useful and productive at your job or your daily practice, to cheering for your favorite team or player, to stimulating conversations with friends. Well-being is the satisfaction that accompanies having all your basic needs met – a sense that things are okay. Life is good, as the t-shirt says.
You’re not asking for a lot here. Just the basics. Simple, right? You don’t need much.
Just remember this: This is true for everyone. Put aside the argument in your head about the uber-rich or celebrities or psychopaths or people living in some esoteric realm of extra-reality. In the grand scheme of things they count for a fraction of a fraction of a percent. I’m talking about everyone else, and I’m calling them “everyone.” Everyone else wants the same thing you want. Your friends, your enemies, your neighbors, strangers, people in all the other countries on the planet Earth, old people, young people, the people you really dislike, the people you love, the people you demonize, the people you idolize. Everyone wants this.
This is simple. Security. Comfort. Well-being. We all want this for ourselves. Why not for each other?
