restore

I went to a museum today. Seeing beautiful things is restorative. Last week, I visited the summer camp where I volunteered for 20 years. It was boisterous, noisy, busy – and restorative.

For me, sitting on an Atlantic beach, listening to the sounds of waves coming and going is restorative. So is sitting in my back yard, or the woods. Reading a book. Stirring sauce. Taking time. Being quiet. Laughing with people I love. All restorative.

To restore is “to bring back or to put back into a former or original state.”

There was a time, far back in your earliest years, when you did not know how to worry. You hadn’t learned that yet. As long as your physical needs were met, you could reside in contentment. That is your original state.

Find that. Even if it’s just for a moment or 10. Or it’s an hour. Or longer. Find it repeatedly. It’s in you. Maybe it’s easy for you. Maybe you have to practice. Either way, it’s there. Find it.

Restore your original state. Return as often as you can.
