no rush

The sun is rising later. Six-thirty this morning. In another month or so, on Halloween, it will rise close to an hour later. That's late. This is why I like falling back, as it's often phrased. When we turn the clocks back, in early November, and move that hour of daylight from the end of the day to the beginning. I prefer to rise with the sunlight. I stay up hours after the sun's gone down all year long, so, yes. Give me back that hour in the morning, thank you.

School's open again. Vacation days are behind us. Attention is turned forward toward the fall.

And still, September is a beautiful month. We begin to quiet down here in Connecticut but the days are sunny and warm. Air conditioners are off and windows are open all night. The first hours of the morning may require a sweater or sweatshirt but an afternoon walk will ususally be in a t-shirt and shorts. Yards need raking, summer flowers need to be pulled out or cut back. It's a time of pause. A time of slowing down, shifting gears, pulling back a little.

I don't like rushing through these days. I don't want to put a pumpkin on my porch yet or put away my lightweight clothes. Not yet. Stay a little longer summer. I will stay with you. Together we'll read a book in the late afternoon. We'll have another cookout on the grill for dinner. Another walk in the neighborhood or on the beach in the morning.

Stay in this moment. The next one will be here soon enough. There's no need to rush. No need to skip ahead. As the saying goes, be here now.
