I have often said that darkness does not exist unto itself; it is merely the absence of light. Light is always there; truth is always there, but it is obscured by impediments, myths, lies, clouds, distractions, excuses, inertia. The events of the past week are the cracks in the foundation which, in the words of Leonard Cohen, are letting the light in. And the light is the truth.
Whether you are struggling to understand the events in our nation, even our world, right now, or you are struggling to believe in your own ability to accomplish a personal goal -- quit a job and start over, begin a relationship, get healthier -- there is the truth, and there are the obfuscations, the lies, the myths, the stories we tell ourselves. There is the truth, always. It's simple. Shine a light on it.
Herewith are some thoughts from other people who wrote about truth and light.
The truth is the light and the light is the truth. Ralph Ellison
Light is the symbol of truth. James Russell Lowell
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Faith is the strength by which a shattered world shall emerge into the light. Helen Keller
Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness. Desmond Tutu
To love beauty is to see light. Victor Hugo
Light troubles speak; the weighty are struck dumb. Lucius Annaeus Seneca
Grace is not part of consciousness; it is the amount of light in our souls, not knowledge nor reason. Pope Francis
Truth will ultimately prevail where there is pains to bring it to light. George Washington
It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye. Antoine de Saint-Exupery
Keep fighting the good fight -- for others, and for yourself. Stay true. Follow the light. Dispel darkness and lies. Stay with it. Stay strong.
