What's cookin'?

There was a lot of homemade food prepared this weekend. A big pot of chili to serve with with hotdogs and fries; french onion soup with the Cognac and Dijon mustard taking a long afternoon to cook on the back burner; cranberry orange muffins with fresh cranberries and hand squeezed orange juice. 

 

This and a funny facebook post* got me thinking about how cooking/eating is a metaphor for life. We all have to figure out different ways of feeding ourselves, just as we all have to figure out different ways of getting through, aka living, our lives. You can't live without eating. Some of us cook for utility, some of us for joy. Some of us prepare food just for ourselves, some cook for others. Tastes change as life goes on. We're exposed to new ideas. Or maybe we must narrow our view as life limits our choices or changes our circumstances.

 

Maybe we realize that our food choices are leading us down an unhealthy path or that we're in a rut that others have chosen for us and we suddenly grow aware that we can try new things. Or we meet someone who introduces us to a different taste. And maybe a new thing will lead to another new thing. And another.

 

Anyway, you get the idea. So, this week, maybe try a new taste or new food. And, just maybe, you might try a new behavior.

 

* Who knew that the hardest part of being an adult is what to cook for dinner every single night for the rest of your life until you die.
